RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] my optronic mast idea with sketch

David

Regular domestic light bulbs are reported to have failure pressures (above
1 atmosphere) in the range from 35 psi (GE I-line 500 Watts) and up to 485
psi (GE40A15/F/PM CD 40 Watts), ref 'Section II. Physical Data' in the
following document, "Underwater Light Bulb Implosions: A Useful Acoustic
Source" (1997), available here:

ftp://ftp.artematrix.org/sonar/Underwater_Light_Bulb_Implosion__A_Useful_Acoustic_Source.pdf

I would guess a CRT to have its minimum failure pressure somewhere in the
middle of this range. Although, remember the weakest spot on any CRT is at
its back, just like on any other light bulb (where they seal off the glass
during evacuation)

To be absolute sure, you could perform a controlled hydrostatic pressure
test using an old PC monitor attached to one end of a very long, marked
rope, and let a hydrophone confirm the implosion.

Best regards,
Jens Laland
