Hi, Brian:
Well, both Aquarius and SDL-1 are white and orange so they are similar in that respect! SDL is the Beaver hulls redone for the DND (Dep't of National Defense) by Hyco, here in North Vancouver some 30+ years ago. SDL is a twin spherical hulled lock-out boat - it has Pisces-style small viewports but a single larger dome port was added years later by Jim MacFarland's ROV manufacturing co. ISE. We used this sub along with Pisces 4 off Cormorant to film the Newtsuit on the wreck of the 'Edmund Fitzgerald' in 1995. Pisces 4 went to NURP/HURL in Oahu - I was going to buy it but Terry Kerby put the word out to the sub community that he really wanted it badly as a back-up for Pisces 5. The few that were seriously interested graciously backed off and the Hawiian Undersea Research Lab (HURL) got it OK' The Cormo and SDL were bought by a Mexican gentleman in Browning, Texas, but were left in Halifax for a decade or more. Lots of legal wrangles, recently, over alleged theft of equipment by the caretakers. I was not aware that the sub and vessel were sold at auction. Any info on that?
Phil

Hello Phil

I believe it was a former Canadian navy ship called Cormorant and SDL1 going
back thru my records it was located in Bridgewater Nova Scotia, I believe
the ship and sub were just sold at auction as I remember it was one of two
subs on the ship but one had been retained by the navy the ship has a
mysterious past as mysterious as the former US Navy Seal LT CMDR that was in charge or the ship, and as I look back my memory has failed me it's not the
same but similar in appearance interesting nevertheless

Hi, Brian,
Iwas just curious about the vessel on the east coast that had the same sub
as Aquarius - do you recall the vessel or the name of the sub?

Thank you
Yes the ship is 220' x 40' and 3600 shaft HP we are currently tied up in
Boston we are trying to decide whether to head south for the winter or
tough
it out, my vote is the Dominican Republic or Haiti I do like the warm
water,
the depth we can work with the ROV is 3300 feet but the project depth now
is
only 650 and I am planning to shoot for around 1000 feet for the sub or
even
as much as 1500 feet, the one nice thing is I don't have to worry about
weight and size I have a forty ton crane on the ship and a 100 ton A Frame
so as long as it will fit on a flat bed I should be ok, we are having an
Open House this coming weekend in Boston anyone interested drop me a note
I
can fill you in how to get there.

Jon I think I am on the server twice , I get two copies of every mail,

and I was thinking of going to the convention but my work was such that I was not going to be around, the Aquarius is a great sub we almost bought a ship that was outfitted with the same sub up in Canada east coast now they
are wishing they had listened to my now but hind sight is 20/20

Welcome aboard Brian, and thanks for joining PSUBS. That's one hell of
a ship you've got there and big enough to host a convention on. I'm not
too far away from you (in NH), although it sounds like you're probably
out at sea for a good part of the year.

Hello all
I have been following the topics for a couple weeks and have enjoyed and benefitted from the information, I am a Chief Engineer on a research ship
and also an ROV pilot and soon will be a sub pilot, I have convinced my
company that we could use a sub more effectively that a ROV, so I am
going
to build one, and I think we are going to buy one also, I had the
pleasure
of meeting Captain Kittredge yesterday and hope that when I am 92 I will
be
in as good shape, I started to read his book yesterday and am halfway
thru
it and can't put it down very interesting man.

Again thanks and I have many questions
