This is a link to a really interesting Text to Morse Code MP3 conversion program. I tested it out and I think it's the sort of thing we could use as part of the communication program we are looking at.

"Morse code requires the time between dits (short pulses) and
dahs (long pulses), between letters, and between words to be as
accurate as possible.
- A Dit takes - 1 unit of time
- A Dah takes - 3 units of time
- The pause between letters - 3 units of time
- The pause between words - 7 units of time"

"For much of the twentieth century, the majority of high-speed international
communication was conducted in Morse code, using telegraph lines,
undersea cables, and radio links. However, the variable length of
the Morse characters made it hard to adapt to automated links, so
for most electronic communication it has been replaced by more regular
formats, including the Baudot code and ASCII. "

That sounds ideal for us! We could play with the tone frequency easy enough so that the transmitted frequency has optimum range (Lower frequencies will travel farther say 1 to 3 khz) From whom could we obtain the computer program? This sounds simple, but as yourself, programing is not my area of skill either!
The speed could be slow...say 300hz...such as the suggested slower modem speeds of yesteryear...

David and Jens,
You made me think of an idea for communicating only using tones sent out as Morse Code from a computer to another computer. You type in a message to one computer and then press send, and the computer would send out Morse Code to the other computer(s) and just like text messaging, the text shows up on another device for someone else to read. Each computer would be able to read the incoming Morse Code sent in tones and then convert it to text. That way you don't need to know Morse Code, just know how to type. That's the basic idea. How to program the computers is not my area.
