From a newbie on the list:

Oxygen Candles (Oxygen Generators), a topic I came across a while ago
browsing (and reading) the
"dutchsubmarines.com"-site.

Look for "Mystery picture #11:  Oxygen generator" half way down on the
following page:
REF http://www.dutchsubmarines.com/pictures/pictures_mystery_2.htm

Amongst things found and read elsewhere, was:

The solid oxygen compound used was lithium perchlorate (LiClO4) in the
old-style, russian TGK,
and potassium perchlorate (KClO4) in the new design.
The change in compound was because it was the lithium type that caught
fire onboard the Mir
Space Station. The compound is contained in briquette form in a "candle",
which generates 600
liters of oxygen by thermal decomposing (burning), enough to support one
crewperson for one day,
and takes up to 20 minutes to decompose.
The reaction temperature is 450-500°C which generates about 800W of heat.

So, my thought in all this is:

Could the old WW2 technology used onboard navy submarines be copied (read:
slightly modified) to
get a combined oxygen generator & sub heater solution?
