RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] 'two types sonar used

I believe the sonarvision unit is the lesser costing unit it’s a sector scan and the imaging is really nice it’s a very small package rated at 1000 feet then the next would be the blueview p900 45 again vice and I saw somewhere the price had dropped a little on the p900 45 probably because there pushing the 130s now, then there is the Didson

http://www.soundmetrics.com/about-sonar-imaging/sample-data

well to get back to you question I believe  best bang for the buck would be simrad 971 there are loads of them out there 675 khz analog sector scan still used today rock solid old proven technology and relatively inexpensive I still use one tripod mounted on the bottom  to guide the rov to the right location on the wreck there like a Timex watch they take a licking and keep on ticking

The gemini is nice too.

But I was referring to the competing Blueview  130 deg sonar.  The
P900-130.  It's the same as yours probably, just a wider field of view.  Yours looked like a 45 deg.   Blueview also has a 90deg. at the same freq.  http://www.blueview.com/media/Data_Sheet_P900-130_v2.pdf

The gemini is a bit bigger/heavier than the Blueview...Probably does not matter for your platforms though :)
The gemini software is quite slick.   (Ian,  they also have an SDK...)

Yes blueview is a very nice sonar works very well, I was very impressed with the mercury unit as well I have the mercury unit on our Hyball and it seems to be working pretty well, the sonar not the hyball the hyball has a few problems with the topside unit I am trying to work thru, had I fell stronger today I probably would have throw it overboard but it was too much work getting to the rail, but if it was easy everyone would be doing it, the computer I am building will be running a windows based software mostly because of the availability of applications.

The Bluefin AUV has an SAS system onboard and the was an impressive sonar for imaging I had the opportunity to see the SS Portland wreck via the SAS sonar and detail is unbelievable.

Andy where you referring to the tritech Gemini  ? I have seen some screen shots very impressive that’s my only complaint with blueview its such a narrow window

The BlueView is Ethernet.    Not sure about the scanning sonar, but most scanning sonars I've seen are rs-232 or rs-485.
BlueView has a nice C/C++ SDK so integration into custom 3rd part apps is pretty easy.

If you really want to get blown away then you need to check out the 130 deg view angle sonars.  You almost don't need a view port/camera at that point...almost.

Both units use a very simple serial port interface into a laptop and a very small program to run it I am also working on a computer that when finished will be 2 inches by 4 inches by 4 inches with a 13" screen to run them in the sub and the keyboard will be an IPhone it will also have a digital direction tilt and yaw sensor in it, I got the Idea from edgetech side scan sonar we had our's factory serviced and they replaced all the components which still worked just not able to run the new version of software so I started playing around built a case and installed the compass in the same case it runs on 12 volts uses a 500gig laptop drive I will have about 200 dollars in it less the Iphone, so to answer your question it's very easy to use the data

I am very jealous!

Could you tell us a little about the systems?  Are these units displaying
data on a laptop/desktop system or on a dedicated display?  How hard would
it be to get the data out of the sonar system for use in a third party
application?

Cheers!
 Ian.

see the hull of both our ships and the pile from the pier ribbing on the ship
and the bait balls out off the ships
