Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] PSUBS 2010 Convention Update

Alec,

Buoy lines need a stand-off float, perhaps 3 to 5 feet above the submarine, then a surface buoy. The stand-off will hold the line out of the way and keep it clear of thruster entanglements. It is also essential to use poly rope, not nylon. Poly is neutral in seawater. Nylon is negative. Neutral is easier to manage for obvious reasons.

Jon,

I happen to have on hand 4 bright orange buoys that are ideal for this
and pretty much indestructible. They've got a hole through the middle
for attaching a line, and are 8.5" in diameter. We just need another 2
subs to go with the buoys.

Snoopy will have both Bartsch comms and single side band, but I am still
lacking a second SSB unit for topside -- just the other day I lost an
eBay bid for one. Due to the built-up nature of the surroundings and the
boat traffic in the inlet, it could be there's too much ambient noise to
communicate over audible frequencies (just speculation). I think Dan
Lance was planning to bring a pair of OTS units. If so, we could use one
topside and one in Jim's boat for SSB all around, and those should be
immune to ambient noise. I think both Jim and I will have VHF, but if
the SSB transducers are below the waterline they work just fine when
surfaced.

My main concern is submerged collisions, and in particular collisions
with Snoopy's acrylic dome. So although generally speaking I don't like
the idea of buoys due to entanglement potential, in the scenario of two
subs sharing a cove in shallow water they make sense. Surface support
would have the job of alerting us if our buoys are on a collision
course.

Yes, we should have a pre-dive meeting to go over procedures.

Thanks,

Alec

A good time to bring up some other dive issues. First, we have a team
of local divers who have offered to act in a safety capacity. I have
told them that one diver per submersible should suffice. Do we need
more?

Because we will be in navigable waters, my interpretation of Coast Guard
requirements is that any surface vessel providing support needs to fly
the "A" alpha flag because of reduced mobility. It's not clear to me if
the "cove" we will be in is far enough out of the way of other traffic
that we don't need these flags.

A diver-down flag is required for scuba divers.

Each sub should tow a buoy on the surface so we know where you are.
Should we standardize on a buoy type?

Each sub needs a VHF radio so we can communicate on the surface. I have
two hand-held VHF radios that I will be bringing with me. We'll need to
agree upon a channel for comms.

Underwater comms can hopefully be achieved with David Bartsch's devices.
Because they use audible frequencies, divers should also be able to hear
instructions.

We should plan on a "dive" meeting to work out any details between
subbers and scuba-divers.

comments?
