JPEG is not a good archival or original format, because it uses lossy 
compression. Every time you resave a JPEG file, information is lost. For 
its original purpose, of serving color graphics over the Web without 
cluttering up available bandwidth, it's great. For any technical purpose 
it is highly questionable.

Something like GIF, which is also compressed but without loss of 
information, would be better. I use TIFF, which comes in various 
flavors, from uncompressed to Huffmann (loss-free) compressed to... even 
JPEG compression is available if desired.
