Jay, That is a workable design. Steve Pearce worked up a hatch assembly using that basic design for his Platypus live aboard sub CT hatch some time back. The disk could be made out of black Delrin or Black UHMW, which is lighter, and would make less noise in the operating of it. If one uses SS for the disk. The pens should be sheathed with some sort of plastic like the above mentioned. The design Steve worked up, has a good number more parts then the Paul Moorhouse design and would also be heavier. The end of the bolts have a slight bevel on them so when driven home by turning the hand wheel, more closure force is applied the further driver home.
