this sounds like a good idea, particularly if you could convert only 
part of the hull to ambient. I do however perceive a problem. you 
mention being able to off gas in the sub, but depending on how deep you 
are and how long you stay at depth outside the hull, you would also have 
to have some sort of system so that you could keep the subs internal 
pressure equivalent to various depths to do decompression stops. again 
it just depends on how deep you are and how long you stay out. it also 
an interesting idea in that it could be used as something of a mobile 
decompression chamber if you knew what you were doing. instead of 
pressurizing a tank you would just descend to whatever depth you needed 
and open the hatch. I suppose you could do this with any ambient sub though.
