I was thinking to use an old BBQ propane oven
Hi, I'm a smith with a propane forge. The BBQ might not get hot enough due
to preset regulator and not enough air supply. However, I have easily made
up a crude forge to melt lead with firebrick just loosely stacked up to
contain the heat and used charcoal and blower from an old hair dryer. It's
easy to make a propane forge, but you might have trouble finding the proper
insulation/refractory where you live. in a real pinch, just dig a hole for
the forge. See -- http://www.reil1.net/design.shtml for some homemade
foundry tips and at http://www.backyardmetalcasting.com/ see the "dirt and
brick furnace" and the "garbage can furnace", "flower pot furnace", etc.
Doesn't have to be complicated at all. - be SURE to do OUTDOORS since
melting lead will drive some off in a vapor. DON'T spill molten metal on
damp soil, concrete, etc since it will explode all over you. It's simple
but certainly quite dangerous. ~
