Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Bilge pump thrusters

Dave,
36 amps is a lot for a toggle switch but not for relays. There are plenty
of relays out there designed for the auto industry that will handle that and
more very well. I have three such relays in "Persistence." They control a
70 amp motor. What I do object to is the snapping sound as they go on and
off. It's so quiet while diving that the sharp sounds break the serenity of
the moment. Solid state is probably best.

For safety, I've installed a disconnect from each of the battery banks. A
K-350 has two 36 volt banks. I used simple "off the shelf," electric stove
receptacles and mating plugs. I'm running more then their fifty amp rating
through them at times but at 36 volts, it's not a problem. Nothing even
approaches getting warm. With these disconnects, if I do run into an
electrical problem, I can yank a plug to power anything down. The way it's
wired one bank powers the side thrusters and the other bank the stern
thruster. As an add incentive, I use the receptacle as a charging port,
main power shut off, and if I ever need to, I can swap power sources by
swapping plugs in receptacles. My 12 volt lighting and accessory power is
on a plug also. Food for thought.
