RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Kittredge Motor Housing help



One thing I'm curious about from the photos... Are the O ring sealing surfaces just the material of the can and end cap that have been machined? I can't see SS cladding on them, or even paint, yet they don't look particularly rusted. I think the K boat battery pod caps have SS on these surfaces, so I would have expected George to seal the motor cans the same way.

It looks worse in the photo.  I was able to clean it up quite a bit, but it is worn a bit.  I'll try to get some close up photos and post them.

Your motor shaft looks to have some etching problems where the seal was. How deep? Unfortunately, that's a common problem for ceramic rotating seals. Sea water stays in the outer O-ring face and works away in what becomes the classic low oxygen trap. You might need some repair work there before reassembly.
