Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Corps of Engineers shut down submersibles

Now here's one to get the media going......
"Suspected Nuclear waste dump in bottom of Lake"
A local submarine enthusiast Alec Smyth recently found himself swarmed upon by Park Rangers,
Police & FBI while attempting to dive in Summersville Lake.  Colonel Robert Peterson
of the Corps of Engineers had issued a ban on diving submarines in the district.
Local residant Edith Gump says " This only confirms suspicions we've had for decades that
the areas Lakes were used as a nuclear fuel dump"

A better question is, what are they hiding in said lakes?

Here's a question that needs asking: how did an Army colonel get the right to shut down a legal recreational activity carried on by civilians? I'd be willing to bet good money that he doesn't have the right to unilaterally impose such a prohibition.

If I were writing that letter, the first thing I would ask for is the text of the statute granting him that right.

FYI,

Colonel Robert D. Peterson, Commanding Officer of the Huntington Area
Corps of Engineers, issued Directive to Operations CELRH-DE on Sept 9,
2011 prohibiting use or operation of submersible vessels in all Corps
lakes within the boundaries of Huntington District. This order was
issued in response to a PSUBS member attempting to dive his submarine at
Summersville Lake in West Virginia.
