Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] wagon style trailer

Brian,
This link shows the trailer under the L. Francis Herreshoff launch I
built in the '70s.

http://www.psnw.com/~jmrudholm/stiletto.html

The hubs were from one-ton pickups, full floating, with the axles
removed and a heavy clear plastic cover in place. The center was
drilled and tapped 1/8" NPT with a small hole for breathing when on
the road. 30 wt oil was the lube. The axles were 4" pipe dropped in
the center to clear the keel. Eight bolt pattern wheels, 16" tires.
Before launching, the NPT plugs were removed and replaced with tire
valves and hand pumped to five or six psi. This kept the Garlock seals
tight when they reached launch depth, say 5-6'. I never had problems
with water in the lube after this fix. Springs were conventional leaf
with the equalizing link in the center. I kept the hydraulic brakes on
the front axle and had a surge hitch, somewhat more reliable than
electric but not as smooth when towing. I had a half-ton Chevvy for
towing and did a couple of trips to Stockton from the Fresno area. At
47', the boat got attention.
