RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] U-701

Is this why so many Great Lakes wrecks are so well preserved if in deep water?

Hi All,

Steel cannot corode without oxygen! That is why ships etc. at deep depths are well preserved. The process of rusting is really called oxidation which requires oxygen and that is in short supply at depths.

It says on that site that some divers removed the hatch and that it is just
steel which will corrode once in air. Why is that? I thought steel corroded in
water.
