RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] revelation

Brian,

Sounds great and you contacted me in just the right time...I am soon to make transmitters for Kyle's surface support system, Alec's boat mounted unit, Jim K's boat mounted system along with an extra unit for Jim;s use on a yet to be aquired surface unit.
Hydrophones ate also to be produced for all of these as well.
I will now purchase the two part molding rubber in larger quantities to save money and will be happy to make yours for you along with these other units.

Send me money...whatever you can and I will make and ship these finished units to you followed by a refund of any unused funds in a separate mailing. For a boat install I am looking at 12' interface cables (these are simply power cords caught on sale at the nearby Lowes and are 16/3 in gage)
For surface dipping system units, 25' is more than enough (however these can be made to any desired lengths upon request) I am making one that is 100' long for testing at the convention. I would suggest a shorter length as these could be extended with relative ease on your end to save on shipping should a really long run be desired. It is not known at this time if lowering this joint transmitter hydrophone combination would be of great benefit or a waste of money.

During your normal deployments, do you dive mainly in fresh or salt water? The reason I ask this is simple...we know this type of relatively inexpensive communications work very well in fresh water...what is not known for certain but will soon be discovered is how well we perform in the ocean itself.

Let me know soon and i look forward to seeing you in Fort Pierce...you are coming?

Hello Dave I too am planning on trying it out I have the Hailers already Standard Horizon Matrix GX3000s and would need to come up with the HBH and underwater voice transmitters, now my question is if you where to mount on the surface unit and incorporate an umbilical of 200 to 300 feet you could lower it down to make up for distance and that would get below the thermal layer, I am just thinking out loud now,

Hugh,

I can't claim full credit for having discovered how these hailers do such a great job at what i was attempting. Doug Jackson tried a similar unit following our lake testing in Tulsa we did together in March of last year and said it worked quite well. Where I tried to build it, he is more of an off the shelve guy. Together, we reached this same conclusion that for the money, these rock!
Think of the underwater speakers some rich people place in their swimming pools to hear music while swimming...we are exploiting this just a bit further. We are replacing this "music" with our own voice and adding a way to talk back as well.
Its not high tech and is broadband in nature. We are simply talking underwater at broadband levels. This means anything that makes noise and can be hear will interfere with your talking and thus shorten your range.
Its also very simple and should provide the range most desire (500' or less) The other aspect that makes this so appealing is cost. If your on Alvin 1/2 mile down, this just won't do you at all but at anywhere fro $20.00 to $800.00 for he more elaborate units its really not bad.
The range? truth is no one really knows for sure and the use of a working system that cost me only $1.00 (plus $17.00 shipping) in Fort Pierce should leave most questions answered and the fact we will use it in salt water should really be a bonus.
I plan to study this unit in particular as it has a maximum output that matches the highest output our transmitter can safely work with...30 watts! The study of reverberations, clarity of sent and received messages and just the overall simplicity of use are all items I am anxious to observe. Its hands on fun at its best.
See you in Florida God willing!

Hi David,  Sorry to be so backward but what is the capability of what you are suggesting.  Is this setup with the bullhorn capable of transmission between sub and surface?  If so, then what would you expect the range to be and what frequency would it operate at.  Seems a wonderful way to go but I want to understand fully what you are suggesting.  I’m a bit slow on these things.  Chs,  Hugh

To all:

Ever heard of a marine hailer?

These things are designed to allow bullhorn type communications from one's dry wheelhouse during rainy and windy weather to other nearby boats.

Take the airborne bullhorn away and replace this with an underwater voice transmitter and also replace the returning pickup microphone with an HBH-2 hydrophone and you have a ready made underwater broadband communications unit!

To make this even more appealing, some newer units are about he size of a new cb console and even contain VHF radios to boot!

Go to ebay and just look at the Standard Horizon Matrix GX3000s Marine hailer and VHF radio. This is for a new unit and its $188.00 and this includes shipping!

Too pricy?... boat yards frequently sell off new but old stock items to make room for incoming merchandise.

Take the Cybernet CTX 100 Marine hailer and intercom also showed on ebay. This old but never sold hailer is going for $49.99 with a $12.00 shipping fee. This is its second such listing.

These hailers run circles around anything I have thus far produced and some have extra desired features to boot...seems I am soon to be out of a job short the transmitters and hydrophones. I can live with this as It was my goal to inspire interest in passive sonar and underwater comms to the point that most subbers look into building or buying something. My goal I feel is soon to be met.

If your not quite convinced, have a look at Alec's old stock but never sold Ray Jefferson in action at the coming convention. He has graciously allowed us to us it for the support vessel and this gives us a chance to run one thru its paces first hand.

To anyone who buys any hailer, I will be here to aid in the construction of the voice transmitters and passive hydrophones or I can assist you in making them as these are not too difficult.
