Hugh, I can't claim full credit for having discovered how these hailers do such a great job at what i was attempting. Doug Jackson tried a similar unit following our lake testing in Tulsa we did together in March of last year and said it worked quite well. Where I tried to build it, he is more of an off the shelve guy. Together, we reached this same conclusion that for the money, these rock! Think of the underwater speakers some rich people place in their swimming pools to hear music while swimming...we are exploiting this just a bit further. We are replacing this "music" with our own voice and adding a way to talk back as well. Its not high tech and is broadband in nature. We are simply talking underwater at broadband levels. This means anything that makes noise and can be hear will interfere with your talking and thus shorten your range. Its also very simple and should provide the range most desire (500' or less) The other aspect that makes this so appealing is cost. If your on Alvin 1/2 mile down, this just won't do you at all but at anywhere fro $20.00 to $800.00 for he more elaborate units its really not bad. The range? truth is no one really knows for sure and the use of a working system that cost me only $1.00 (plus $17.00 shipping) in Fort Pierce should leave most questions answered and the fact we will use it in salt water should really be a bonus. I plan to study this unit in particular as it has a maximum output that matches the highest output our transmitter can safely work with...30 watts! The study of reverberations, clarity of sent and received messages and just the overall simplicity of use are all items I am anxious to observe. Its hands on fun at its best. See you in Florida God willing! Is this setup with the bullhorn capable of transmission between sub and surface? If so, then what would you expect the range to be and what frequency would it operate at. Seems a wonderful way to go but I want to understand fully what you are suggesting. I’m a bit slow on these things. Chs, Hugh
