RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] my optronic mast idea with sketch
For a real basic periscope could one have two prisims and then lenses on
each end? I guess the lens part would take a bit of doing with the correct
focal lenght and all. Edmunds Scientific has quite a bit of optical
products.

An optical periscope is actually a rather complicated and accurately built
instrument, see the US Navy WWII Submarine Periscope Manual, at
http://www.maritime.org/fleetsub/
Here is a direct link to one of its fold-outs:
http://www.maritime.org/fleetsub/pscope/foldout/fig4-16.htm
I was very enthusiastic at a time and bought a lot of surplus optics from
these people, ref
http://www.surplusshed.com/
but I have not used any of it in a periscope, yet. :)

** Sorry, I guess I wasn't very clear, I was thinking of a regular optical
** periscope with prisims and a telescoping mast that would retract flush at
** the top of the psub. the telescoping part would have to be made up of at
** least three concentric tubes in order to get some hieght since you don't
** have much room to work with in a small diameter sub.
