The way I understand a real basic periscope (with regards to what is in
between the two prisms, or "90 degrees optical bends") is actually quite
identical to what happens when you look through a combination of two
telescopes pointing against each other.

You know how things looks smaller when looking the wrong way through a
telescope (or a pair of binoculars)... this will be like your lower
section of a periscope, whilst the upper section of the same periscope
would be like the other telescope, but now oriented in its proper
direction of view.
