Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Re: pressure sensors

Andy

I found you playing the devils advocate very educational - and since I
play with electronics from time to time - I agree one hundred percent in
all your 12 arguments.

My idea is to monitor and control the various parameters by means of an
embedded pc (running DOS). Some of the signal sources will be polled
frequently, while other signal sources will be monitored through hardware
interrupts.

All this is very fascinating, but like Frank says: "It's a wet environment
and water and electricity don't mix well. Add a little salt to the mix and
corrosion becomes a real problem."

The thing is, I am still not sure how to build a proper protective housing
for the various electronic systems planned. And since I'll never know
neither when nor what fails, I guess a full set of additional non-electric
instruments are needed.

I also like to be prepared for any total electrical power loss. Because
even a pure mechanical pressure gauge (or anything else you can't see in
total darkness) won't help you should you not have implemented yet another
backup system: emergency lighting. Hence, my idea is now to build such
minimum powered illumination into all the most vital mechanical control
systems.

As for the colored sketch in the background: this was just something
laying on my work table at the time, and I'm not sure of it's whereabouts
anymore, sorry...

Best regards,
Jens Laland
