Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Sonar Testing

Hi jay,
I guess they would be picking up the smell of gasses that are rising to the surface from the decomposing body.
I suppose in that case there would be an optimum window of time that they would be effective through.

Alan,

The dog rides in the bow of an electric powered RIB (no engine fumes to throw the dog?s snoz off).  Many water cadaver dogs (takes special training over a basic cadaver dog) will reach over and snap the water with their mouth.  We guess that they are tasting the water.  While none of my SAR dogs (had three) were cadaver trained, the one I would take out on the water would snap the water like the cadaver dogs so it must be something in their genes.

Jay, was the Cadaver dog free diving or using scuba gear?

It amazes me what you Americans have over there.
