Alan, Collision avoidance sonars are not fool proof against accidents. If used as designed, these provide but another tool to help keep mishaps to a minimum. I am trying to drum up support for a "show and tell" system that can be installed aboard boats attending this coming convention in October.( Although gainfully employed, my job at the Postal Service has seen a reduction in "extra" hours I had become accustomed to enjoy. My hobby budget must be likewise adjusted) The sensor for use at the convention will be suction cup installed on the inside of a viewport such as was done aboard Kraka. (The permanent install hydrophone will be substituted for demonstration purposes) It may be raffled off as a door prize? The newest hydrophone contains no resonance chamber and seems far more sensitive to incoming sound. It will be a system that once turned on will require no operator intervention until the boat is back at the dock. The speaker will be mounted using the interior magnet as the submarine is made from steel. (just "stick" it some place out of the way!) This is a great chance for someone to acquire the best I have to offer. Schematics and parts lists will be available to those "do it yourselfers." I will cover half of the construction costs on this unit just to see it given serious thought. It will allow at least one person a basic passive sonar capability. There is still some time to go before this meet and I will try my best to complete this system in time. I am going ambient for (1) cost (2) simplicity (3) ease of escape and (4) the lack of any nearby deep water David Bartsch From: alanjames@xtra.co.nz To: personal_submersibles@psubs.org Subject: Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] new sonar Date: Mon, 18 May 2009 19:36:56 +1200 Sorry David I was thinking sonar and pinging off oncomming objects. On reading again I see you're picking up the sound.
When diving I listen before I surface, and can hear boats from a reasonable distance, so I think there would be merit in this
system. It's more difficult to determine direction of sound when underwater and your unit would do that better than a diver
could. I haven't given a lot of thought to collision on surfacing other than that I may have a dive flag on a pole or another
alternative is what Brent Shaws "dry dive" has, a camera on a periscope.
The offer sounds great, but I doubt wether I'll finish my sub before Christmas. Everything is taking
10 x longer than I thought. I would be interested in it at a later date. Can you post pictures with size when
you've finished the unit? I've gone off building an ambient after looking into it a bit more deeply, are you
still pursueing this?
regards Alan
