Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] new sonar

David. This too sounds like a useful device. I would expect most psubs will have a surface boat near by when they dive, and your voice comm units should be able to aid in the ascent once the sub gets close to the surface. I've often thought a tethered sub with power, comms, and maybe HP air would be a useful method for extending dive duration and also enhance safety, although the tether is a potential "snag" point.
As for collision avoidance, the subs I've seen are very slow and maybe a released buoy/float when the sub gets close to the surface could be useful to alert boats that a sub is getting ready to surface. Maybe just a long antenna with a flag would help too, so the flag would be visible before the sub was in the strike zone of a boat.
I will be using a video camera to look up, around, and behind me where I can't see through the windows. Your directional sonar could be added to the tilt/pan camera mount so sound from the direction the camera is pointed in could be added to the screen image. Lots to ponder here. Frank D.
