David. This too sounds like a useful device. I would expect most psubs will
have a surface boat near by when they dive, and your voice comm units should be
able to aid in the ascent once the sub gets close to the surface. I've often
thought a tethered sub with power, comms, and maybe HP air would be a
useful method for extending dive duration and also enhance safety, although the
tether is a potential "snag" point.
As for collision avoidance, the subs I've seen are very slow and maybe a
released buoy/float when the sub gets close to the surface could be useful to
alert boats that a sub is getting ready to surface. Maybe just a long antenna
with a flag would help too, so the flag would be visible before the sub was in
the strike zone of a boat.
I will be using a video camera to look up, around, and behind me where I
can't see through the windows. Your directional sonar could be added to the
tilt/pan camera mount so sound from the direction the camera is pointed in could
be added to the screen image. Lots to ponder here. Frank
