I had a variable thickness K-350 head CAD model made up off of the data that came with James Frankland's K-350 heads. So I just took the thinnest point and of that model and added some material to the whole inside of the heads to give me a minimum thickness of 1/2" or 9/16" respectively. This was done so I could hopefully get close to the weight that would of likely been in the heads George figured and then the ones he wound up using for the K-600. For a 1/2" head or 12.7 mm Density = 0.2782 pounds per cubic inch Mass = 222.7020 pounds Volume = 800.5678 cubic inches -------------------- Metric Data Density = 7.7000 grams per cubic centimeter Mass = 101015.9591 grams or 101.0160 kilograms Volume = 13118.9557 cubic centimeters __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ For a 9/16" head or 14.2875 mm Density = 0.2782 pounds per cubic inch Mass = 247.3441 pounds Volume = 889.1512 cubic inches ------------------------- Metric Data Density = 0.0077 grams per cubic millimeter Mass = 112193.4460 grams or 112.1934 kilograms Volume = 14570577.4025 cubic millimeters or 0.0146 cubic meters ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ For a difference of 247.3441 pounds - 222.7020 pounds = 24.6421 pounds for each head. 24.6421 pounds X 2 = 49.2842 pounds extra weight ----------- Metric Data For a difference of 112.1934 kilograms - 101.0160 kilograms = 11.1774 kilograms for each head. 11.1774 kilograms X 2 = 22.3548 kilograms extra weight So it looks like we have about a 50 pound total difference in the K-600 subs weight. "We must of sold well over a hundred sets of plans of all the designs to our midget submarines except the K-600. I always felt that the K-600 was a little too difficult to build and the operating depth was too deep to enable a diver to flood the submarine and make an escape with scuba if he got entangled at the maximum depth." From page 266 "I designated the submarine we were building, the K-600 because it was to have a maximum operating depth of six hundred feet. This was twice the operating depth of the fleet-type submarines our navy had developed at the start of World War II." From page 273 The data about the head thickness changes on the K-600 are on page 272.
