RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Kreideseesub Annular VBT

Emile and Carsten,

I was able to work up a concept model this morning of what I was basically thinking might work for a removable inner cover plate arrangement.  I didn't have time to put in details like the plumbing or all the weld beads. But I think you will be able to see what I'm thinking.  There will likely be some size adjustments as well.  The 1/2" plates that contained the O-ring gland might be able to be thinner to keep the upper weight down some. Perhaps even weld on some rolled channel stock, and then weld that onto some 1/4" rolled plate. That 1/2" plate can have the gland machined into it's face before it is rolled.  The cut out in that plate might work best to be remove after it's rolled.

It might also be easier to weld the two rings onto the 1/2" rolled plate parts and the horizontal side weldments, then install the whole unit as one assembly.  That way you don't have those blind welds to do.

The reinforcing bars I added to the edges of the cover plates to keep that area stiff, since there is no bolts there currently, might not be the best option.  I was thinking about welding in some blind hole SS inserts in the 1/2 plate, outside of the O-ring gland.

Any thoughts?

Emile,

I am taking a guess but think you might be talking about baffles in a tank to reduce free surface effects of a partially filled tank.

Brent ,

The annular tank is great for saving space. Corrosion is a concern. We apply a coating in the tank by putting 2 litres of coating in and turn the sub around.

That will hold 20 years.  Then you have to make 3-4 inspection hatches in..

Horizontal weldment is a “slingerschot” don’t know the English name but it is to get more stability with half filled tank.

Greetings Emile and Carsten,

I've been meaning to ask you guys about the annular hard tank your installing between two stiffener rings. Will it be just one tank or have a type of baffle arrangement?  I see one horizontal weldment on the left side of the picture.  Will you weld on the inner tube section that completes the tank, or bolt it on some how?  I'm mostly thinking of how to deal with corrosion in that tank.  Have you made any drawings of that tank?

"inside view. note the hull is on its side.  Later the space between the frames will be closed. Then we have a strong stiffener and annular hardtank."
