Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Frank's new nose cone

The problem with most of the new acrylic subs is that they just aren't very tough compared to the work done by the old Perry and Hyco mules. Those things were built like the proverbial tank, and needed to be. If I was building with an arc segment bow, then there would be some protection. Otherwise you are leading with your chin. That said, bumping and banging is sort of a slow motion thing (mostly). I got caught in six knot tidal currents in Egypt once and hit a rig in mid-water going backwards at full power. It made quite a bang, and I'm glad there was no plastic back there to worry about. Strictly speaking, your contact is right. If your plexiglas is going to hit first, then you'd need to slow way down. The old JSLs at Harbor Branch are slow as Christmas on the best of days, but it's a lot of tons behind the impact. Design-wise, you have to plan for the worst and hope for the best--if you think you need guard rails, then you do. Put 'em on there in the design stages and be ready for that damned oil rig.

Thanks Vance.  Guess I need some redesign.  What sort of things, what sort of experiences.  This guy was talking about Acrylic sphere type nose subs and not going more than ½ knot underwater in low vis.  Also thought that was what forward scanners are for. Hugh

Hugh,
Don't know who you talked to, but bumping into things is part of the biz. That's why they call them crash bars.

Well Frank, I think that you have certainly introduced a new standard in P-subs.  With a nose like that I expect to see a couple of Buffalo horns and a saddle somewhere.  That is a pretty sexy look, not to mention that I wouldn’t want to be a shark or other sea beast on the receiving end.  Only way I could compete is with a nice female figurehead.  Congratulations on the whole design.  I enjoy reading your bits and pieces and can see a lot of practical thought gone into everything.  Good point on having off the shelf designs.  Afraid I am tending to go for special made items too much methinks.
Regarding bumping in to things,  How often in practice do subs bump into thin gs?  If you have an acrylic dome in front you are not in good shape.  Talking to one guy with experience he says that it is a submariners fear and for that reason travel at speeds within stopping distance ability.  As I have never driven one what is the feedback?  Hugh

Hi guys. I've been working on this for a couple days now. It's almost ready. Just needs a little polishing and then will get plated either in chrome or maybe brass. As I've said before, I expect to crash into stuff at some point, so I needed a front bumper. Get the point? Frank D.
