Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Acrylic Supplier (was: is this ok)

Hi guys. I would think the edge finish would depend at least partly on what type of seal you are using. If it's an O ring, the groove has to be pretty smooth, but maybe not the whole edge. A rubber O ring can't depress into small cuts or grooves running across the O ring, but can seal fairly well if the cuts are in-line with the O ring. If the disk has a tapered edge, that will squeeze tighter as the pressure is applied. Look in Stachiaws (sp?) book and see how much pressure was applied to some of those disks.
On the other hand, if you are using a liquid polymer to seal the disk to the housing, the smoother the better. A polyurethane type sealant works best on a smooth surface, like glass. If it's a rubber gasket you choose, smooth is not that important because there's no contact on the disk edge, only on the face.
I'll be using the polyurethane. Frank D.
