RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Decision Time.

Very nice CAD work James.   I think both your ideas have merit, but I think the releasable front viewport would work best for your subs configuration. One thing I suspect some guys are missing is that one reason that you might not be able to exit the top hatch, is because the sub is on it's side and up against some thing, or even upside down for some really odd reason.  Either way  you  could likely exit out the bottom hatch and/or front releasable viewport, but you will still heavily flood the sub in the process. So in that scenario you could have a bottom hatch that wouldn't  normally be able to open and have room for you be able to exit with the sub sitting on the bottom, but be able to have it work out. How every I  suspect you planned to move the battery pods further down and out to allow you to exit through the bottom hatch with the sub sitting up right on the bottom. That configuration would give you more hydrodynamic drag, but you would have a better meta centric height to show for it.

Now for the front releasable viewport. I'm not to excited about the releasable through hulls on Nemo. So I was thinking that a version of the K-250 acrylic domed hatch, with it's internal locking means would work nicely, Whether your viewport is centered on the front head, or down at an angle. You could use a less domed viewport like Nemo and use the same kind of hinge or do with out the hinge. If you would like to do with out the hinge, you could add a internal metal collar to the metal seat to keep the releasable viewport centered.

Hi All.

I am soon at a point where i need to make a decision on something with my K boat.

I am considering a couple of fairly major changes and would really like to hear your thoughts/comments.

Basically, the reason for these changes is to modify something i don't like with the design.    With the K boat, there is only one way in or out.  In the event of entanglement or some other failure, flooding the hull to open the top hatch would be pretty nasty.

So, in order to give me a second means of escape, i have thought of 2 possible ideas.

1.  A removable domed front viewport similar to that on "Nemo".  This would allow only partial flooding of the hull to be needed for escape.    Plus the bonus of a much better view!  The front main tank will need to be adjusted a little, but i think it can be done.

2.  A second smaller emergency bottom escape hatch similar to that on "Kraka".  Much better for escape as depending on depth, it could mean no flooding at all.   However, this i think will take a lot more work to build, plus i will need to adjust the distance of battery pods from the hull among other things.

Ive added a page to my site so you can see my designs.  Remember, these are just ideas at this stage, but i need to make a decision.  I have deliberately left the last 3 reinforcing rings off for now until i decide.

What do you all think?    Hatch?     Domed Port?  or do you think they are silly ideas and i should just stick with the design as planned and lump the 1 exit?

Many thanks
James
