Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] 3D Fabrication at home

Rick,

Why be a starship captain, when you can be a starship?

"How much did your SLS process cost". Now that is a loaded question.  Lets just say that size does matter.  I had three parts made up for a pet dish design I did a few years back and it cost me about $1000 US.  I could get it done now for less then half that. My largest and tallest part was just under 5" and since they have to put down a layer of powdered material and sinter it as they built up, it cost allot more for taller parts.  They will quote you mostly based on the volume of the part, it's height, and the number of parts to be made like that.  The more parts you have done of the same design it cost allot less per part.  I needed to see and handle the part to see if it was as good as it looked on the computer.  Once I had the parts in hand I saw were I needed a number of design changes.  It was very helpful.  If I had just ran out and had my plastic injection molds make it would of been a hugh waste of capital.

As you can see from the pics of my parts there are fine lines in the parts, showing the build up lines in the Duraform material. They are much finer then you would see in a SLA part.  I painted the parts since they come white and I needed a visual aid.  I could of detail sanded more and used bondo to get a totally smooth surface but I didn't need that at the stage of development I was at.

You'll need a STL file format of your 3D CAD models for getting a quote from the diffent companies.  Some of them like APP have to quoting done instantly on there web sites. At the time I needed my parts made, Harvest Tech. was by far the cheapest.
