Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Quick Casting question

I think George is considering casting a hull or hull section that includes framing in the casting.  All in one piece - no separate frames or stringers.  So the interior would have some kind of pattern, maybe like a waffle, to reduce the amount of aluminum in the casting.

The waffle depressions would be where the delicious syrup - err, condensation - would collect.

My questions and wild speculations are:

* No difficult frame fitting and welding
* Difficult casting process?
* More efficient structurally - at least in my mind.  Is it better to run the pattern at an angle or longitudinally and laterally aligned?  (I remember calculating the wrap angle for a composite pressure vessel in college but don't know about an external pressure design.)
* Would need structural design help - the crush depth spreadsheet won't do this one

Subject: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Quick Casting question

Does anyone know if I do a waffle pattern on my Preasure Can's inner hull if that can substitute for welded in place braces? (Aluminum casting, inner pattern is a wide waffle pattern)

Or should I just stick with a straight pipe and weld the braces/ribs in it like normal?

Fiigured I'd ask before I tried this, Considering the lack of space I have it's a production to do anything with casting. but if it'll work I'tll probably be worth it.

Thanks.
