It isn't.  My experience with chrome and chrome plating for automotive use 
is that it weakens the metal and does not provide corrosion 
protection....and, it costs money to do.  Basically, it's shiny, that's it. 
If a person HAS to have shiny, I think that polished stainless steel would 
be the way to go for a sub.
