Rick,
I don't know what technically makes the metal
more brittle, I only know it does. I think it's possible that due to
the negative charge put into the metal for an extended period of time
from the plating process actually forces the molecules apart due to like
forces repulsing each other. This is just my theory.
There is actually no heat involved in the
plating process. It's all done electrically by submerging the plated piece
in a disolved chromium bath. The piece to be plated is given a neg
charge while the disolved chromium in the bath is charged pos. The
chromium then gets attracted to the metal and coates it in microscopic
layers. This same process is used for all kinds of plating.
I did an experiment with a chrome plated piece of
steel (I don't know the composition of this piece) round stock 1" thick and bent
it in a 20 ton press. The chrome plated piece broke before the non chrome
plated piece. I had always heard that chrome pieces were more brittle but
I wanted to see for myself. I saw.
I don't think chrome plated metal has any
place on a sub.
Myles.

myles
what causes it to become more
brittle not enough heat to effect temper

Gents,
The chrome plating process makes the
metal more brittle. Brittle in sub = bad. Save the shiny stuff
for other things.

brian how about just plate the ring with
chrome.

Stainless hatch ring
Brian,
I think you're fine as is. The one
that's really nice to have in stainless is the ring that your hatch
lands on, because in getting in and out you scratch tha paint very
easily there. But that said, all the home built subs I've seen so far
have steel lands due to the cost of a large stainless ring. The "pro"
subs have SS there, we just repaint.

Alec
When I put together my domed hatch ( in my machining class)
I first had the hemisphere fabricated and then I had a 2" ring welded
to the edge of the hemisphere. At the time I
was not really clear on how everything was going to come together
and now in hind sight I realize that the 2" ring that I welded on
should have been stainless steel instead of what I used.
My question is, can I fabricate a stainless ring
and connect it to what I have now ? I could remove
some of that material ( the ring part ) which is 3/4" thick so as
to reduce the weight. I'm afraid if I don't make that ring part
thinner the hatch will be too dam heavy.
If I do add this new stainless ring should I just weld it to the
existing ring? and then put it in a giant lathe and machine it
true?
Here is a picture of the hatch cover:
Thanks
Brian
