Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Inner / Outer support ribs.

Rick,

Now I wish I had them call me when they were rolling my hull and I'd have pictures to share. All I did was tell them what I needed and that I needed it rolled clear to each end. They said to get the material cut to size and have it drop shipped to them. I did, they did, and they delivered as requested.

I only had one seam in the eight foot long hull that I located on top, where the conning tower support ring went through two feet of it. My resulting weld is in two lengths with a total of six feet. I temporarily tacked it together in a few places on the outside, ground a groove half way through along the seam on the inside, and welded it in the areas that would be covered by the framing. After all the framing was in, I welded the rest of it on the inside. On the outside, I again ground along the seam until I hit the root of the internal weld and then welded that too. If I'm not mistaken, I think I put two passes of weld on both sides of that seam.

I didn't bother grooving and welding where the conning tower was going to be cut out but I had it tacked together and didn't cut that out until all the frames were in and the hull tube welded together.

That's what I did, but I have no doubt there are other ways and maybe some better.
Dan H.

guys

since all rolled hulls end up with a flat spot at both ends, and if you can not deal with this with cumalongs and a rose bud. the simple way to solve the problem is to construct the hull using two pieces, both rolled to the required diameter. Verify the dia with the ribs, the cut off the flat spots and trim to fit.
ps layin copper backing strips for the seam held to ensure penitration.

if the ribs are tacked with bracing this will solve all hull out of round conditions.

Hi Gene,

I think you might end up with a slightly oval cylinder rather than around.
If the ribs are manufactured in the same way, they also have the same
deformity. Of course the ribs may still fit, but the won't be any help
pushing the cylinder into round.

A slighly oval hull might still work, although you would want to calculate the crush depth based on the longest curve of the hull. I'm not sure about
safety factor, might have to increase it depending on the % of out of
round. I've heard that out of roundness is a factor that makes it hard
(impossible?) to accurately calculate crush depth.

Cheers,
 Ian.

Hi Dan and Rick,
I understand Rick's drawing of rollers and hope Dan has a clever way around the problem of last few inches being unbent. I was wondering why you don't just get a piece of metal 5 inches wider than you need, and after you roll
it... cut of the edge that didn't get bent?
Same with the stiffeners.
