Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] My Sub design

Hello Dave,
I like your design because it is basicaly simple. But there are three things
that made me wander.
First there is the acrylic dome. It is a big one with a special shape.
Making it yourself is probably impossible and buying it costs you a fortune.
True. I read here recently about the problems with acrylic domes including
the difficulty of manufacture. I would not make it myself.
I need to run some pressure sims on that shape. Not shown in the render is
a frame that the viewport is built in to. The frame takes the stresses at
the rear and top and runs down in a diagonal from the rear towards the
front 3/4.
The main reasons for a dome are:
1. better visibility
2. If more than one sub is deployed you can have visual contact
3. Less claustrophobic
4. quick death if it fails
The second point is that you might have problems looking at the bottom. You
have to look through a 2 mtr. watercolumn. In The Netherlands you wouldn't
see anything. I suggest that you add a viewport at the hight of your knees.
I have 2 solutions for this. on is a mirror, like a side mirror on a car
but pointing down. As you say you would still be looking through 2m of
water. The other solution is a fixed video camera.
The third point is the vertical thruster. I have no experience but my common
sense tells me that avoiding for example a rock or following a slope by
adusting your trim is rather a complicated way to do so.
Good point. I can add a couple of vertical thrusters to the sub.
