An ideal just came to me. what about using multiple water detection systems mounted in a vertical line on the inside of a balast tank, with each connected to a different LED. the LEDs would also be mounted in a vertical line corresponding to their respective sensor in the tank. this way one could have a (fairly) inexpensive way to tell how much water is in the balast tank.
