In the early 1980s I did a report on manned subs. I made a trip to Perry 
Oceanographics in Riviera Beach, Florida. 

One of the engineers told me the brushless DC propulsion motors use 120 VDC. I 
think they recharged them when the voltage went down to 60 VDC.
