Nothing ridiculous about that idea.
It is used all the time, but it is not the answer to heat build up,
as it is less efficient method to pass current than connectors,
so it produces more heat.

But you can use it to power low power external "thingies" like 
"intelligent" termometers, pressuregauges etc.
