Hi Jacob, Carsten here..
A PEM Fuell cell is not a source of power .. is more or less just a
power
converter - you still have to store the "source of power" on board - for
example
as the both gases hydrogen and oxygen.
CSSX runs with Batteries (7ts of lead acid) about 24,5 miles underwater
- if I remove
the batteries from the drawing and put a PEM cell and high pressure
bottels (300atmos.)
with hydrogen and oxygen on this place (and weight) about 77 miles.
With PEM and the hydrogen in metallhydrid storage tanks about 140 miles
- but this
tanks are to expensive.. with oxygen as cyro-liquid gases in vaccum
isolate tanks
and the hydrogen still in Metallhydridtanks I get the best results about
340 miles..
But I do not want super-cool vaccum tanks, pipes and vales on board..
.. they still lost some percent a day if not running..
This (theoretical) figures shows : Batteries are a technology of
yesterday
- special in submarines .. The new german navy subs 212, 214 class have
Fuellcell
on board and rules out any conventional submarine diesel-electric -
easy..
In costal waters also the big fat atomic-subs..
To produce the gases on board needs one thing: power. If you have any
source of power on board
(I mean underwater) to produce the gases the Fuellcell require - it will
be much more effenciy
to use this power source direct for the drive..
If a fuellcell car is on the market, maybe in the next future:
buy it - scrapp the car-hull or use it in your garden for flours -
and build a high performance submarine from the drive. If the car
is not on the market - forget it - a custom build fuellcell and
gasmanagment is much to expensive..
best regards, Carsten
