The James isn't as big as the Missouri!  The current is
sluggish and steady.  

The big problem with the clear parts of the river is
that in those places a depth of ten feet would be
VERY deep.  And in those places, the current can be
a challenge to a canoe.  

The worst part it, though, is that the river is
populated bass-boating good old boys who don't 
really pay attention to where they are going.
