[PSUBS-MAILIST] Boat registration info for all states
Watercraft registration information for all states and US territories is
available by going to www.NASBLA.org and downloading a copy of the
"Reference Guide to State Boating Laws" Page 23 lists registration info for
all the states.
In MN, (and in most states) watercraft are registered by length not value.
The registration fee is based up the length. There is no specific category
for submersibles - there are several on the books in MN, but they are
classed as "utility vessels."
Registration (the MN numbers and sticker that is placed on the port and
starboard of boats) for a boat under 17 feet would cost $19 for three years.
If it is a homebuilt craft, you just need to bring in receipts for materials
to show it is homemade and you don't need to pay sales tax on it because you
have paid tax on the materials.
If you sell it (as a completed and registered vessel) to a second party
the buyer needs to transfer the registration by bringing the bill of sale to
the DNR or Deputy registrar and sales tax is collected on the amount on the
bill.
If the boat is 16 feet or longer besides being registered it must also be
titled (a one time fee of $18).
