Re: A surprising discovery?
Hi all,
I thought to that question before subscribing
and thus from time to time I did the same test Jon did:
I was not visible.
Hopefully not visible I thought, because I was always
thinking that archive should'nt be accessible to non-members.
Not because I want to live in closed-circuit,
but rather because fixing in the time a message that was
included in a thread seems to be unappropriated.
This will recall us that all what it written through the Net
even though it may look like a 'discussion' is not:
all messages have the same characteristics than paper-written
messages: they remain.
I just did the test again: now I am on the list
due to the Psub archives.
I must admit I don't like that.
In the other hand I don't know what additional complexity
does it need to restrict access to the archives.
I just know sometimes you ask for a site that you
discover being of: 'unauthorized access...'
Having a look to the archive before registering is a good way
to get an idea of what the list is all about. I did it, like most of us.
But perhaps could we split the archive page into: complete archive
(accessible to members) and sample archive (accessible to all).
In the last one, names would be omitted from the original messages,
and these messages cover, say, the last 3-6 months.
I know all this should be discussed in the ther list: the non-technical one.
Sorry.
