RE: Fwd: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Paint...zinc primer
Hi Jon,
Many people have used zinc primers on steel and opinions vary depending on
who you talk to. I personally think that it is sort of like painting a
galvanized scuba tank. To me, zinc is an anode and should be used as a
"stand alone" coating. I save the zinc for bolt heads.
Here's is a link that talks about zinc primers on steel (bottom of the
page).

The zinc coating is an interesting point. I've talked to a couple
people about this and gotten some different viewpoints. The vendor I
have targeted to sandblast the K-600 also has thermal zinc spray
capabilities to coat the sub with zinc prior to painting. For those not
familiar with it, thermal zinc spraying is an alternative to hot-dip
galvanizing for materials that are too large to hot-dip. It looks like
an oversize mig welding head and in fact uses an arc to vaporize zinc
wire and then blow the molten zinc onto a metal surface via compressed
air. It is definitely inferior to the hot-tip process but does offer
protection beyond just paint. I'd be interested in any pro/con opinions
on whether I should include the zinc coating as part of the finish.
