Jon - this is exactly how it is done - calculate the projected area of 
the dome, find the force, divide by the seat bearing area to find the 
stress on the seat.  The only caveat is that the stress will not be 
evenly distributed, so to find your seat thickness you need to assume 
that the entire force acts on the inner diameter to get the worst-case 
scenario cantilever.
