I agree with you, the 10 foot long tube would not be exerting an axial
force on a the seat. I think the sphere segment is a bit different
though because there should be some axial force everywhere however,
except near the base of a 180 degree dome. The apex should provide the
most axial force.
If the answer is as simple as just using the SA of the base that would
be great.
