RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Dome ;was Own submarine pen (Eurosub)

Title: Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Own submarine pen (Eurosub)

Hi Alan,

Nemo 100 makes the domes also with the hot pressing method.

Blowing is the simplest way and make the tooling is the least effort. Limit is 200 metres in my opinion.

Pressing is far better for roundness , material efficiency and thickness.

For the 24” / 610 mm OD. Dome we start with 35 mm plate. After forming it is still 35 mm on the edge and 25 in the apex!. Good for some 500 M ;-)

Thanks Emile, well done, enjoyed looking at the photos.

I had a quote for a dome from Jürgen Herrmann from Nemo. I assumed it was a cast

dome as he said could provide certification for it at an extra price.

I had a blown dome made for me locally, wich turned out good. I think there was a bit of luck involved.

Due to cloth being glued to the acrylic disc's bottom surface, the bottom face had less friction & dragged

into the dome more than the top surface. The outer edge of the flange sloped inward as evidence of this.

This was a desirable effect as that edge has further to travel around the curve of the clamping plate.

Would love to have a go at this some time, as I was involved with a process where copper was drawn

over a mold in a similar manner & have some ideas I would like to try.

Regards Alan

Alan,

We make the domes ourself with our friend Reinhard from Nemo. We developed tooling and Reinhard buildt a oven with intergrated hydraulic press.

I not say it is easy. 1 of the many parameters wrong and you destroy a day work and the material  (Euro 800,- for the small dome and 2300,- for the big dome)

Say 1 to 4 goes wrong.

I somebody go “try this at home” I would advice to start with a 1:4 scale setup.

There are some pic’s of the domes on :

Regards,

Emile

Carsten,
Wondering where you got the dome made?
Was it a reasonable price?
Great to know we have a submarine certifier on our site.

The first picture shows a quick and cheap way to create an own submarine pen for small subs.

The second picture shows the view from a dome with 950 mm Diameter (37 inch) after rebuild the bow from the original 600 mm (24
inch) dome.

Both pictures taken last weekend at the Kreidesee in Hemmoor, Germany
