Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Depth\Pressure Gauge

You got it Alan!

I live up north where it freezes quite hard in the winter.  All the other lines either drain out or can be blown out easily but the one to the depth gauge and the gauge itself traps water so I built an oil filled diaphram.

James, plumb your gauge to anything that goes through the hull.  I don't see why you couldn't use the port to inflate your forward main ballast tank but you will have to leave off the check valve.  I guess you could substitute it for a high pressure check valve in the line before it passes through the hull.

All you need is a small line..... Maybe you could just drill and tap a 1/4 inch pipe thread hole in the hull and not weld in anything?  You only need a pipe and valve on the inside of the hull.  Nothing needs to connect to the outside.  Check with someone that knows more about structural analysis for the best place to drill a hole.

Hi James,
I think it was Brian Ryder that had a Grainger depth gauge screwed into a through hull
with a "solder sucker" on the seaward side. This was all filled with oil & was very accurate.
He posted me an image of it ages ago. He has a picture of the gauge on his project page but not
with solder the sucker. I guess that's the purpose of Dan's diaphram; fill it with oil so you aren't exposing
the gauge to sea water

Subject: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Depth\Pressure Gauge

Hi All,

I have a couple of questions regarding plumbing as im at that stage now, at last.  Ive nearly completed everything else.

1. Depth Gauge.  Where is this supposed to go on the standard K350?  Dont tell me im going to have to add another 1/2 inch pipe nipple pleeeaasse.  I've stuck fairly rigidly to the plans but looking at them now, i cant see where its supposed to go.  Also looking at pictures of other peoples subs, they all seem to have the depth gauge mounted to a standard 1/2 inch nipple.  I cant roll my sub around any more so i really dont want to have to weld in another pipe nipple....Better get practicing my overhead welding...?   Could i pipe it off the high pressure air for the forward tank maybe?

2. Same subject.  Dan's Persistance seems to have some sort of diaphram on the other end of the depth gauge inlet.  Whats that?

3.  There seems to be litterally hundreds of different pressure gauges i could get.  Anyone recomend anything good?

Thanks as always
James
