RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] News from Montreal Sea Scouts

Hi Jim,

Good idea to contact nearby seascouts. Every kind of project on or under water is potentially inspiring for this youth. Good luck and thank you for your interrest.

Thierry,

Thank you for the reminder about the Sea Scouts.  What a great organization for building quality and character in our young people.  I've located several chapters ("Ships") nearby and will be certain to be in contact them as my project progresses.

Best regards,
Jim

Hi Psubers,

After a long silence, let me give you is fresh news about Montreal Sea Scouts while summertime is coming.

For those who maybe do not remember, we were diving into the underwater world when we planned to buy and (eventually) refurbish an old 2000$ piece of scrap, which happen to be a 1ATM sub. Just watch this video and the similar one to figure out:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8dKdFzwQDw&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL

After a number of discussions with many of you, after reading Busby's Manned Submersibles and about Kittredge's adventures, we have been really inspired about personal submersibles. However, this sub clearly looked not safe enough, having no idea about its history (serious rumours about drug carrying), no plan, curious conception which represents too much investment in money and time, etc...

Nevertheless, a short visit in Pierre Poulin's backyard inspired us to eventually build up fibreglass two-three manned ambient sub... It is cheaper, safer for beginner crew, easier for scouts to get involved in the construction, casting being more accessible than welding, or at least a smarter compromise for a first experience.

Apart, we still have a four sailboats fleet to maintain, which is already a great job for our volunteers. So we decided to concentrate our efforts to promote sea scouting across Quebec. Over navigation, the eventuality for sea scouts to build a sub is one of our punch line to describe the thrill of sea scouting. By this way, we are scuba diving yearly to give our boys the interest in underwater life, which is the first step!

Moreover, be sure that if there is another Psubs convention close to Montreal, we will be there. By the way, Sea scouts of America are presenting a jamboree on east cost for their Centennial in 2012. It could be a good idea for Psubs members to be visible in this event.

Well, this was an honour to join this group and we will be back as soon as we have a new project to share! Keep going!
