RE: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Prop
This is totally off the topic of subs, but many years ago I almost got
to be the navigator on a racing speedboat. It never actually happened
for lack of funds, but we did get as far as prepping the boat and going
out for practice runs. One of the people who prepared the boat was an
old man who was the prop specialist. By specialist, I mean the guy had
made an entire career out of filing props for racing boats, it is all he
did and he had been doing it for maybe 40 years. Ironically, he had only
one arm because the other had been cut off by a prop, at shoulder
height, when he flipped while competing in a 24 hour race in Rouen. What
I took away from this was that fine tuning a prop is as much art as
science, and the finer points are neither obvious nor easy!
Cheers,
Alec

Here's a photo showing the propeller on a Norwegian Kobben-class coastal
type submarine. This propeller has been given a notched slip (trailing)
edge in an attempt to make it quieter, that is, to reduce singing and
cavitation.
