Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Design depth

Hi Jinesh,

I am going to assume "design depth" is the same as maximum operational
depth, i.e. the maximum depth you expect your submarine to operate at.

One approach is choose you operational depth based on how/where
you expect to use your submersible. Once you have your operational
depth, you choose a safety factor (this various depending on the
designer, for some military subs this 1.25, for others higher).
The operational depth multiplied by the safety factor gives the
minimum failure depth. You then design the pressure hull to failure
at some point deeper than this.

Hope that helped.

Can you post some information about your design and the requirements?

Thanks!
 Ian.

Subject: [PSUBS-MAILIST] Design depth

Hello People,
I am trying to carry out design calculations for the pressure Hull, according to the ABS guidelines. However, I couldn't find a section in the Guidelines suggesting how to find design depth for the sub.

I have been using Hull Calculator (found on psubs website) as a reference for my calculations. Also, I've found different criteria (equations) to find the design depth on different sources.

Can anyone suggest me what equation to use to find the design depth?
TIA,Jinesh
