Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] safety systems

Hi Frank,
The diagram is from Phil's paper.
I had to print it & scan it so it's not too clear.
If you follow the light line down you see it attached to the skinny
drum section of the reel. Running through the centre of the drum
is a strong rope wich also runs through a lifting hook on the sub wich
is obscure in the diagram. The load line clamp latches around the drum
reel. It doesn't matter whether the drum of the reel breaks or not.
The reel doesn't float it just remains attached on the short rope / cable
wich is running through the subs lifting eye & reel drum.
The thinking behind using floating line for the emergency release buoy
is that if you have 300 ft of line & you are stuck at 150 ft the extra 150 ft
would play out & with wind directions & current directions the line could end up
going all over the place in time.
I believe someone had to pay for the full paper originally so I don't know about
getting all of the paper up on the Psub site.

Hi Alan. I have spent considerable time thinking along these same lines about the release buoy. That sketch you included is pretty close to what I had envisioned. One difference is that the "reel" in that sketch appears to be part of the buoy that floats up. The "ice tongs" looking device for grabbing the sub is exactly what I had pictured in my mind. I priced out a 1000 ft. roll of 1/8 inch stainless braided wire a few months back and it was fairly inexpensive. Can't remember exactly but it was about $130 or so.
The lifting lugs on my sub are designed with just that system in mind.
Thanks for the sketch, and the "floating reel" idea.
